Twickenham was opened by the LGOC in March 1912. It was commandeered by the Air Force in 1918 and resumed bus operation in 1919. In 1921 it became a bus body building location, but commenced bus operating again in 1924. It operated routes such as the 27, 27a, 37, 71, 111 and 290 during its operational life. Closure came in April 1970. After this it was used as a stores for LUL's engineering dept. It eventually got leased to the Routemaster Heritage Trust who used it for nearly 3yrs when the site was bought by developers for the flats now occupying the site.

Why was it AB? Was it to do with the area as Hounslow was/ is AV? Q

The codes given to garages are a bit strange!
At some point some bright spark decided to start using the alphabet, A, B, C, D etc. some garages got the letter representing their name - B, Battersea, D, Dalston, E, Enfield but others got strange letters - A, Sutton, G, Forest Gate. Once that was used they started using AB, AC, AD, AE etc and AB was given to Twickenham.
Amongst all this you have codes that are like the garage name, like NS is North Street Garage, Romford or Brixton is BN. Then you also have the Tillings Garages which start with T (TB - Bromley, TL - Catford).
As you can see its a right old hotch potch of codes with not much rhyme or reason!

ST nothing strange it's very similar to signal codes the different lines started with A,B etc then later extensions went to double letters it all depended on what codes were left. The codes being connected to the area really came in later there is probably located in the LT archives a document saying why they picked the codes the way they did.

I'd love to see the documents, if they still exist. I'd find it interesting to know why things were chosen the way they were.
