I have been told that there is an old air raid shelter with access from one of the platforms any more information would be great.

I have never heard of it or seen it despite it being in my signal maintenance area for about 10 years and back in the 1980s I was installing PA speaker chains on that branch. However, I would not be surprised, there are so many nooks and crannies all over the system even in the most open places. The one lasting memory of that station is when I almost had a fatal accident returning from unfreezing a trainstop in the snow before the last eastbound train late one night. Carefully following my footsteps back to the platform from the home signal I suddenly hit the ground, my head missing the pozi by millimetres but being clouted from behind by my heavy toolbag forcing my face into the snow. One of many lucky events as I got up with nothing more than a wet face and sore neck thanking my lucky stars.Unfortunately my boot had landed square on a buried car licence plate as I missed half a footprint in the dark and that's what caused my fall.

RT your posts are always fascinating I am sure you could write several books on your working life. It looks like you nearly met your maker when you fell over thankfully you survived. I have found this which shows the entrance after seeing this I suspect that there must be more around the system.

Interesting image, I can't say that I ever noticed the place but the concrete matches that which I recall at the station. You're right I could write several books about my years at work, possibly several chapters on slips, trips, falls, knockouts and visits to hospital etc. To this day I still do not know where and when I broke my right leg but some time before it was discovered as it had self healed by the time it was noticed on a leg X-ray taken for another reason sometime later. It was either at Moorgate in an unlit NPA passageway where I walked into an open footway box in the dark or at Acton Town where I tripped and landed across the pozi, one runner and neggy, fortunately on the right side of a current rail gap, the current was on the other side just two feet away! The two incidents were years apart and I suspect it was the latter as it was painful to walk with black and blue legs for about three weeks whereas in the former I severely jarred my right leg and it was decidedly painful to walk on from the knee to the ankle for the same or longer time.
