It seems that a member of staff was watching whilst on duty and on the platform. PornHow interesting, 25 years ago it was done in station ops rooms and line control rooms! Baker Street was a good place for live on train porn, it was not unknown for a late night train to be held an extra minute or two to catch the action in the last car on the newly fitted PTZ cameras. Of course secton 12 stations had improved CCTV facilities following the Kings Cross fire and that included video recorders upon which some station supervisors were known to play porn in engineering hours although the late night fights in the ticket halls could be a good watch too.

The 59 stock that came over to the Northern line normally had at least one hole drilled into the metal J door to give a view of any action in the front car. The position and the height of the hole(s) varied, presumably according to the height of the person that drilled them (that way, the driver could turn in his seat and look through the hole). Presumably there were a few SPADS in those days as a consequence!
After the 59's appearance on the line, a few holes started to appear on 38 and 72 stock j doors, although the 72 stock door was thick wood rather than thin metal. On 38 stock, the usual view into the car was via the glass behind the fire extinguisher fitted to the cab side wall at the opposite side to the driver. It was only with the introduction of the 95 stock on the Northern line that 'official' peepholes were fitted, although the glass in these were often scratched to obscure the view, or they had been removed completely.

An interesting remark with regard to SPADs ! Two of my former colleagues as former final year apprentices working on Northern line signals in the late 1990s were involved in an automatic SPAD counting project, every time a trainstop head was struck it was counted on a meter. I have no idea if the detector circuitry was fitted to more than one Northern line trainstop but following the trial it was not adopted for further use AFAIK. Perhaps late night life in all but empty driving motors was not happening at the time !!!! Personally I thought there could have been mileage in the project, there again everyone really new that trainstop technology was in the last chapter of its life with all new moving block systems being designed without them.

I don't think anyone was too bothered at the time with the whole system in a state of 'churn' for a year or two as LUL changed the management organisation and flooded the job with 'green' external intake DSMs although one or two thatr I knew were jobsworths.

According to layman statistics one in every ten men is as bent as a nine bob note but there are types and degrees of apparent unusual or abnormal behaviour and anyone who spent more than a year at LT/LUL will know that in the old days the job was awash with characters, comedians, barrack room laywers, dossers, gamblers, drunkards, the shady, the bookworm, the jealous, the queer in oh so many forms. Whatever perversion, fetish or bent you can imagine all were to be found somewhere in the nooks crannies, stations, signal cabins and offices and at all levels and grades. Much of what was deemed to be abnormal then is fully accepted today and rightly so and much of the rest has been pushed under the carpet because political correctness quells opinion. Personal I think we are all quirky in one or more ways behind closed doors but the vast majority conform to a generally expected standard albeit less so than than perceived decades ago. I can recall some of the incidents, the facts of which were circulated throughout the system within a couple of days when operations and signalling staff were caught in circumstances that most of us would find unpalatable at best and criminal at worst but I'll say no more about that, I have no doubt that some of them are to be founds in annals of newspaper archives and the forerunner of internal INF reports.
