Visited the Toy & Train Fair at the Lincs Showground this morning and grabbed some more Hornby Dublo and Trix wagons as well as a few used Seep point motors. I have about 16 all metal axles to change for insulated axle sets, something to keep me busy in my spare time.
Over the months I have picked up a lot of cable wagons, some with cable drums and many without. Another relatively easy project is to make cable drums from scratch out of plastic bottle tops and cereal packets and covered with printed 'cheeks' and 'battens' created in a drawing software and then matt printed on my colour printer. The original Dublo cable drums all appear to be made from 'broomstick' and covered with glossy printed 'cheeks' and 'battens'. Most of those in my possession have peeling, ripped or damaged paper covering so I am keen to restore them although I will create new drums of varying sizes as per proprietary cable drum specifications and for different cable manufacturers than LEC or Pirelli which most 00 gauge drums seem to be models of.
At £4 each or three packs for £10 the 2nd hand wagons are hard to resist especially when some packs have two or even three wagons. Of course when I change the axles on a wagon that adds on average £2 per wagon but even so it beats the prices of new plastic rolling stock hands down. Being mostly diecast the older rolling stock is better suited to modern 00 track and highlights the weakness of modern Chinese made locomotives from the main 00 gauge manufacturers of today.
