I came across this website while looking up something else, some reputed hauntings of LUL stations are listed. I spent nights alone at most of them and heard nothing untoward and have always believed in the paranormal ever since seeing the ghost of a child who was burnt alive in a house I lived in as a young child.
Paranormal database
There are plenty of spooky places on the Underground but there is a difference between spooky and haunted, the spooky can for the most part be explained such as at Down Street disused station where voices were often heard. One night whilst working there alone in the IMR I decided to go and investigate that which I had heard often as muffled mutterings in engineering hours but which had never bothered me although they unnerved several of my colleagues when they accompanied me occasionally and frightened the life out of them when having to go there alone.
I discovered two cleaners had entered the station and were busily chatting with one another while mopping down the landing at the top of the stairs between the platforms. I was also aware that similar but distant sounds travelled down the tunnels from Green Park station when people were working in the platform area there at night.
Most of what was/is reported as paranormal can be explained by the presence of workers nearby, sounds originating in the streets, other railways such as Mail Rail when it was in service, random startup of plant such as pumps and tunnel fans, cessation of power supplies etc. The Underground is a noisy environment even when no trains are running and no passengers are present and the most unnerving thing of all can be the deathly silence when the signal main has been switched off for some reason and there is no relay or transformer hum and/or no slow speed scanning audio 'dinging' with a consistent beat etc.
Worst of all perhaps was a Tilley lamp mantle burning out back in the days when the tunnel lighting was poor at the best of times and it suddenly went out because it had been overloaded. Being stranded in a pitch black tunnel even for a few minutes was a challenge for the senses especially if attempting to do anything but remain still.
