How could the unions put the deal to their members when they were deliberately given a deadline of just a few hours? I'm afraid the RMT is just playing politics. I have just listened to what an RMT rep had to say on BBC2 The Daily Politics. The RMT is holding the travelling public to ransom, if it really is the case that LUL is not ready to introduce the planned night tube then why have a strike at all proving only that RMT is intransigent? A work to rule would highlight the issues without costing staff basic pay and without the disruption to the travelling public. However, a work to rule would also force staff to do what they are being paid for and would probably highlight much that is wrong with current working practices. That of course favours neither LUL nor RMT as it would no doubt show incompetence and bad habits on both sides and that tends to support the theory that strikes suit both RMT and LUL. It was interesting to note that Nigel Lawson said the government had no involvement in the negotiations although my suspicion is that the RMT is looking to take it on because it has another axe to grind regarding union legislation.
