A trial has recently started on the Central line of automatic obstruction detection equipment.
Can anyone elaborate on this, where, when, how etc.

That's obviously to develop the technology for driverless trains. One of the things in the leaked document on driverless trains was the mention that the trains will be fitted with obstacle detection sensors.

Presumably the set up will, over time, be tried in increasingly arduous locations?

I don't see why it should only be used for driverless trains. If the technology works, then fir it to all ATO trains. I know that ATO trains will (for now) have a driver in the cab, but their reaction may be slower in some circumstances.

This is old hat stuff. Tried first on the Jubilee line extension where it failed badly. Something in the tunnel area was interfering with the signals it gave off.

Between being the line being tested, before handing it over to the Jubilee line.
