There are two interesting articles on the future of Camden Town station, with lots of discussion, at London Reconnections: Main discussion [ Click here ]the shelters [ Click here ]I never cease to be amazed at how often the LT signalling system is slated as being old and clapped out. It worked well and has stood the test of time, despite budgetary cutbacks over the decades spending less on maintenance and increasing the service intervals of every component whether safety critical or not. I do wonder how the current crop of signalling systems will stand up in comparison in 50 years time if indeed they have not fallen apart long before then! There is no doubt in my mind that in its day LT was the best in so many things from a technical viewpoint. I seriously doubt that anything LUL comes close when viewed from the many different angles.

Mind you, how many signal failures, or at least those shown on live update etc. are actually 'signal failures' and not an excuse for something else such as staff shortage, 'operational problems', strike action, and other things that they'd rather bury? Given that you can often take what they say with a pinch of salt, I think that the figures could probably be adjusted downwards. I've known where an earlier minor signal failure on a line has been shown as the excuse for delays etc. on the line for most of the day, even though the problem was sorted out and trains were back to normal in a short time. The real cause for the delay for the rest of the day was due to something different. It's not only signal failures that are used to disguise other causes either.

Happens on the mainline too, eg a all stations LST-SNF train will be late due to the driver needing a pee or something, and the assigned delay reason will be a defective train that morning in Colchester!

How does this bear upon the paper payments of compensation between NR and the TOCs? Is it yet another example of how a so-called free market is actually propped up by the tax/fare-payer?
