I know it's been removed but when it was in how was it used. Could they reverse from the eastbound platform back to Wimbledon and shunt ahead from the westbound and back eastbound.

According to the 2016 District line Line Information Book, the crossover could be used both ways - under hand signals.
Down-Up (W-E) Detrain. Proceed to Limit Of Shunt board. Stop. Change ends, over crossover to EB platform.
Up-Down (E-W) Change ends. Passengers can be taken. Proceed over crossover to Limit Of Shunt board. Proceed as normal towards Wimbledon.
Very much like the S-N and N-S working when the Totteridge ground frame was in operation.
