I was talking to someone about the access to the IMR but something that was not clear is which end of the IMR is the main entrance. I know that you enter from the street then down the stairs but I thought it was at the east end of the eastbound where the short bit of platform is but I was told it is the other end?

IMR "PB" was at the east end of the EB platform, as you say. I doubt that its position will have been changed.

I always thought that the door at the east end was the main one but I was told that the door towards the west end was the main one, I know these rooms normally have 2 entrances/exits with one of them being designated an emergency exit. RT will be the one to know which was which as the stairs came down by the east end that is why I have always thought what I did I may have to go on the Hidden Underground tours.

Dave, The small open platforms at the east end of the E/B and W/B roads are the access to the IMR entrance. When entering from the street it is normal to access the IMR via the power room, the power room being at the west end of and adjacent to the IMR. My recollection is that it is also possible to walk to the East end IMR door, avoiding entering the power room, using the narrow platform edge corridors / office spaces from the cross passage at the bottom of the east end staircase or indeed from the cross passage at the bottom of the west end staircase. The platforms are all still there but hidden behind the walls except at the IMR entrance and cross passages. There is no lighting in the corridors / offices, it was removed decades ago so most people entering from the street will use the power room to access the IMR whereas those arriving by train will generally travel from HPK and disembark on the E/B by RPB8. It is possible to leave by train on either platform by prior arrangement although it would more usually be via E/B to GPK

RT thanks I suppose Down Street must be unlike other IMRs and funny place to access. I might be wrong but I don't think any of the other disused stations are like it.

Dave, I'm not sure what you mean, there are IMRs in strange places all over the system! Baker Street Met, King's Cross H&C, Waterloo Bakerloo, Piccadilly Circus Bakerloo, Victoria Vic, Hounslow East, Aldgate, Arnos Grove to name a few. Down St happens to be one of the few disused stations with an IMR but it is not the only one and the other disused stations are of several generations of 'Underground architecture'. As for Down St, having an IMR on the platform is not unusual, what is unusual about Down St is the fact that the majority of the platform area is walled off from the track, otherwise it is little different to other sites where IMRs are on the platforms. The station is a typical layout for its time as far as platforms, staircases, lower lift landing and subways are concerned although modifications at top station removed the ticket hall (AFAIK privately rented out apart from the portion that became a ventilation plant room) and capped the lift shaft at top station basement level. Within the platform walls a corridor runs along each platform edge through multiple offices from east to west and at the west end are the defunct long disused switch rooms and telephone exchange and a door and steps down to the track at the throat to the siding. Examples of stations with IMRs on the platforms are such as Wood Green, King's Cross Picc, Paddington Bakerloo and some of the east end District IMR sites.

The only IMR at the east end of the District line that I can recall as being on a platform is Hornchurch, but this is a disused part of the platform .

Now I am testing myself Baker Street Met is under the platforms sort of, Kings Cross is off the platforms, Waterloo is low level but I have seen the door with the sign on and Arnos Grove is in the substation building.

Drico I think I know what you mean but some of those rooms are very close to the platform i.e. just away from the ramp. Now what can you say about Down Street as I'm sure you know more than you are letting on.

I can not add any thing more about Down Street IMR as I only visited it once when I worked on the Piccadilly Line, the visit would have been in the mid 1980's. As RT has said most IMR's had two doors and would one may have been used as a main door with the other one less used.

Drico Reading between the lines I thought you had an increased knowledge of such things.

The only IMR at the east end of the District line that I can recall as being on a platform is Hornchurch, but this is a disused part of the platform . Yep Hornchurch was what I had in mind but I haven't been anywhere east of Whitechapel since the late 1980s and I'm sure there were other equipment rooms (TD / relay rooms / CERs) on the platforms at that end of the District rather than at the ends. In the central area South Kensington IMR is on the platform of course as is Ealing Common while Hatton Cross, Heathrow T123, Holborn, Queensway IMRs are off the end of the platform. My recollection also from the late 1980s is that Chalfont & Latimer IMR was on the platform at the north end of the N/B. The point being that there is nothing really unusual about the location of equipment rooms whether IMRs, CERs, Telephone Exchanges, Relay Rooms, SCRs, switchrooms although there may be preferred locations. Such rooms may be at stations, at trackside, off premises and can be above track, below track, on platforms, adjacent to platforms, in disused lift shafts, permanently closed cross passages, disused subways, other locations.

Yes Baker Street Met is at the end of the passageway under platforms 2 & 3 known as the 'cathedral', in fact it is under the concourse to platform 5, Waterloo is in the escalator chamber under the concourse, King's Cross is at trackside under the subway with the stairs to the H&C, Arnos Grove is indeed upstairs in the substation, Picc Circus is in a disused subway to the old lifts, Victoria is in the running tunnel, Hounslow East is east of the station at street level and Aldgate is in the disused telephone exchange room in a long disused area of the site.

Northern line IMR locations I think I may have posted these on here before, somewhere. With the advent of the new signalling, they’re no longer relevant anyway From memory: Morden: Staff car park adjacent to platform 5, via car park and via end (handy to look out over the pointwork area Tooting Broadway: South end of NB platform. I can’t remember if there is an additional exit via the power room to the SB track Clapham Common: above the north end of the island platform, via steps from the crossover Stockwell: at the North end of the disused siding, via north end of SB platform Kennington: South end between platforms 1 / 3, via cross passage London Bridge: On south end of NB platform, via platform Moorgate: North end between platforms, via NB platform Euston City: above the south end of the original island platform, via steps from the crossover Camden Town: South end of platform 1, via platform (via relay section to frame) and via narrow platform edge (frame end – handy for the frame operator to stick his head out and look up the junction!) Archway: Off SB side of SB platform, via SB platform Highgate depot: In depot adjacent to Tamping Rd, via depot walkway. Technically it’s a Relay Room, not an IMR. Manual operation of the depot if required being carried out from the DMT’s office at East Finchley East Finchley: North of platforms, adjacent to NB running line, via staff area. Frame above Finchley Central: Adjacent to NB running track south of platforms, via track. Frame above Woodside Park: None – had ground frame south of the SB platform High Barnet: At south end of SB sidings, via sidings walkway. Frame above Charing Cross: North end of SB platform, via SB platform past frame area Hampstead: NB end of SB platform, via platform Golder Green North (controls running line moves): South of platform 1, adjacent to substation, via platform 1 / works area Golders Green South (controls moves in and out of GG depot): In depot, via depot walkway Colindale: off NB end of the platforms, via the platforms Edgware: Adjacent to platform 1 approach, via staff area
