Can someone clear up for me, what are the desk numbers including the east end of the Picc. I ask as I was having a drink recently with someone who said there was a Wimbledon desk I am not aware of that one.

Can someone clear up for me, what are the desk numbers including the east end of the Picc. I ask as I was having a drink recently with someone who said there was a Wimbledon desk I am not aware of that one. Heathrow was desk 1 and the original metal mickey was desk 5A. I never did know exactly how the desks came to be numbered as they were because each of desks 1 to 4 was also split into sections A and B. I think 4B vanished when 5A was installed but I could be wrong. I installed new telephone panels into desks 3A and 3B in the early 1990s. Even though I was a control room TO there on night shift in the noughties I cannot say exactly what each desk covered now, I really can't recall. I never heard the signal operators call the desks by number, they would say the Heathrow desk, Ealing desk etc The Wimbledon desk was probably desk 2, a control room photo would confirm it but I don't have one to hand.

From what I can recall from a visit, in the 1980s the line from EC to Putney Bridge was controlled from the Earls Court desk. I have a picture shewing the diagram as far as Parsons Green but I cannot lay my hands on one shewing the line further West.

I've now found my pictures from a more recent visit (in 2013) shewing the EC Desk and the control area in the background. This would seem to confirm the the area in question is controlled from the EC Desk. I'm having problems uploading to Flickr just now, so I will post the pic when I can.

As far as I remember Putney and Parsons Green came under the Hammersmith desk 2A, I could be wrong.
