The 'C' stock came with the buttons needed for auto working. The buttons that is, no wiring though. When they were refurbished, the plans for the refurbishment were to use the wiring that should have been for auto working. But there was no wiring! So much of the new stuff was piggy backed through the existing wiring. This produced some fun effects with the first full train we had in the depot at Hammersmith. Such as the middle cabs windscreen wiper continually on.
At first, when the refurbished stock came in, district line drivers were not allowed to use them on the Wimbledon to Edgware road section. Then when I started my annual leave, some twit gave one to a district driver at Edgware road. The train got out of the station before it sat down. I got a call from the Met controller at home. The depot manager had told him I helped in writing the new defects book on them. Could I go to edgware road and get it moving. No I couldnt, I was on leave! So I asked what was wrong. The brakes were on hard and they couldnt get them to release. Oh thats easy, I said. District driver, try switching the MCB back on for the rheo brake and train radio. Switch that off on the refurbished stock and you get a full brake. On the old C stock, district drivers liked to switch that MCB off so that they had a better brake without the rheo. On refurbished C stock, it also operated a full brake!

I know what you mean I was on a secondment and there was a derailment the duty manager on duty did not have everyone's confidence so they contacted me and asked if I could go along and take control.
