When I joined, the guard had to deliver papers, boxes of goods for the small shops at stations and post office parcels on staff trains. The staff trains also had the job of taking post office workers to work.

When LUL have closed all the ticket offices, there will be space to do the same !!! They can then employ Parcels Office Staff and then in the future I suppose they could multi task and sell......... tickets.

Yup, postal workers were issued with cards allowing them to travel the staff trains. It all stopped when private coaches replaced staff trains.

My old man used to get the Staff train up to St.Pauls, he was a Postal worker. Yup, postal workers were issued with cards allowing them to travel the staff trains. It all stopped when private coaches replaced staff trains. Ah yes remember the Mellows Coaches, I used to catch one from Chalk Farm to Camden Town sometimes if the P-Way working at Hampstead and Golders Green hadn't caught it and taken all the seats. Mind you it was a pleasant walk at around 0430 after working the night shift smelling the freshly baked bread as we passed the bakery. We'd get the 214 bus from Camden to Moorgate and wait for the first H&C east to Whitechapel where we booked off. The good old days when we were supposed to travel everywhere by train and were usually locked in at stations all night! I certainly remember the days first trains running with mail baskets which the guards dropped off at sites such as Earls Court, of course that was internal mail AFAIR. The only staff train I travelled on was tube stock from Earls Court to Fulham Broadway in 1977 as a newbie in clean overalls and shiny track boots on District line resignalling work. Of course I travelled on lots of engineering trains over the decades and also on passenger stock for engineering purposes i.e. we used a passenger train out of Morden depot in the late 1980s to commission the trial Victoria line train radio system which we installed on the Northern line between Tooting Bec and Colliers Wood. It was ideal for working on the trackside amplifiers with the doors open adjacent to the equipment location and the light from the car rather than the torches we had to use when on foot! AFAIK today's trains still carry internal mail and other items. When working at Acton Picc depot we'd use the Picc stock to carry letters, time sheets, emergency stores items etc to and from Arnos Grove depot and our other depots at Heathrow, Hammersmith, Earls Court and Kings Cross. Someone would meet the driver as necessary to despatch or receive items as required, it was a common practice so I expect it was done by engineering departments on the other lines too.
