Seventy years ago today, 173 died in the panic to get to the safety of the Underground at Bethnal Green Station when an air raid warning went off. A memorial service was held today and the new memorial unveiled. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-21645163

I recently read a novel that is based on the events that night, it was excellent: www.goodreads.com/book/show/7897402-the-reportIt must have been truly horrendous, I pass through there now and again taking my son to the toy museum next door and I always think about it.

I presume the commemoration plaque is still in situ, one wonders these days with so much metal being stripped from remembrance monuments up and down the country. It must be 20 years since I last worked at Bethnal Green.
