Why weren't they kept like that in service? Bit the old steam locos, the ones preserved are kept immaculate, but I'm told they were filthy when in everyday service.

Why weren't they kept like that in service? I used to put 3 through the wash each day on my shift as a shunter. Then the cleaners would hand wash everything that had been missed on the wash road at Hammersmith. They came out clean. Shunted on a road ready for service. 5 minutes later they were dirty just from Londons air quality!

As a Signalman at Hainault on nights I hated the wash, trains all night Wash back Charlie's and no sleep........

You have to laugh at the comment "Skills shortage Tricia Riley, Director of Human Resources at TfL, said: 'We recognise that there is a real skills shortage within the transport sector" Yep of course there's a skills shortage, TfL/LUL were instrumental in the decline of engineering skills within LU just as BR were with Network Rail. It's easy to blame the politicians of course but more backbone in 1980s/90s LU management might well have made a difference.
