One of the most important schemes of improvement on the Metropolitan Railway since its opening in 1865 was started by Lord Aberconway on Wednesday, July 24 th, when he laid the foundation stone of the new Baker Street station. The ceremony was attended by a number of well-known public men. Lord Cheylesmore, who presided, said that the laying of the foundation stone marked a new era of success for the company, and emphasised the facilities which were now being offered for transit on the Metropolitan Railway. As an instance of the progress of the line since 1865, his lordship mentioned that the number of passengers had increased from nine millions in the first year to no less than 103 millions last year.
