Did this defect suddenly appear? Major Emergency Engineering at London Waterloo affecting the South West Trains Network Sunday 14th April 2013A rail defect was identified between London Waterloo and Vauxhall on Thursday afternoon. The nature of the defect has meant that a temporary speed restriction has had to be imposed which has resulted in a reduction to the number of trains we are able to run across the affected area. Our engineers have been conducting regular inspections of the area and have advised us that the defect needs to be repaired as quickly as possible, before it deteriorates. We have looked at all possible options to carry out the work in a manner that will have the least amount of impact to our customers. The engineering team will require 16 hours of access to the track to allow them to remove a rail crossing and replace it with a brand new one. The access required by the engineers will mean that platforms 1 to 10 at London Waterloo will be out of use on Sunday 14th April until approximately 16:00hrs. A very limited train service will run out of London Waterloo as a result of this work. Please see below for a summary of train services affected by this work. Check here for engineering improvement work that is already planned to take place aound the network. www.southwesttrains.co.uk/alerts.aspx

I think the definition of a rail crossing is somewhat different to that which I know! At LU we'd replace a crossing (point rail, closure rail and two wing rails + 14 track circuit crossing bonds) in a normal engineering hours night shift including routine maintenance of the turnout. I'd expect a cast crossing to take the same or less time to replace. I expect they are referring to something much greater e.g. a crossover (comprising two crossings, two stock and switch rails, possibly check rails, the rails forming the crossover track and as many as 50+ bonds) which may cross multiple tracks and involve more than two crossings.

It does seem rather strange that they're going to replace a complete crossing and not just a defective component part. Must be a major fault.

Sorry, I meant to say crossover - i.e. the whole works. Until you described it, crossing is a term I'd have associated with point work.

Yes that is correct a crossing is associated with pointwork (one crossing per turnout) but where one track crosses another and where there are no turnouts there will be four 'crossings'.

And now another rail defect that will almost shut down Waterloo!:
"A rail defect has been identified between London Waterloo and Vauxhall.
Because of this, emergency engineering work has been organised to take place on Sunday 21 April until approximately 16:00. Platforms 1-10 will be out use meaning only a very limited train service will be able to operate to and from London Waterloo during this time"

I'm so glad that I have no need of NR, I think NR is a national disgrace, too many cooks and not enough broth, overpriced and not well managed. I haven't been on the mainline for more than 10 years and that was a one off trip from Kings Cross to the Midlands for a one day training course with a ticket bought on an LU railway warrant. Going was not too bad but the return journey was a nightmare with track and signal issues delaying arrival back in London by more than an hour. I was not impressed. Now that I live in the Midlands I see how lousy services are, there are no London services within 10 miles of my location and even if there were I would not be interested at the prices charged even though I have a Priv which I haven't used since 1999.
